Objectives:
To develop guidelines and standards for the accelerated aging of electrical insulation materials under electrical stress. The committee is also a forum for discussions on the electrical aging of electrical insulation materials.
Past Achievements:
Over the past decade, this committee has been active in developing two IEEE
recommended practices.
One document is concerned with a procedure for testing the insulation of magnet
wire under ac stress. The other is a recommended practice for performing voltage
endurance tests on form-wound stator winding coils and bars. The latter document
(IEEE Std 1043) is now widely used by utilities as part of the qualification
and acceptance testing of coils for large motors and generators. This recommended
practice was developed in conjunction with the Power Engineering Society's
Electric Machinery Committee.
Current and Future Activities:
The committee in conjunction with a working group of the Materials Subcommittee of the PES Electric Machinery Committee has developed a voltage endurance standard specifically for hydrogenerator stator windings. This standard has been issued as IEEE Std 1553-2002 “Trial-Use Standard for Voltage Endurance Testing of Form-Wound Coils and Bars for Hydrogenerators”. There are plans to develop a similar document for Turbogenerators.
IEEE Std1043-1996 “Recommended Practice for Voltage Endurance Testing of Form Wound Bars and Coils" is undergoing a reaffirmation ballot. The balloting is complete was submitted to RevCom in the autumn of 2003.
Meetings:
The Voltage Endurance Committee has in the past met during the IEEE PES Winter Meeting, but now meets more often at either the Electrical Insulation Conference or the International Symposium on Electrical Insulation.
