Electrohydrodynamics Technical Committee

Objectives:

To study electrohydrodynamic phenomena in liquid, gas, gas-liquid, gas-solid and gas-liquid-solid multi-phase systems. To establish international industrial and technical standards for electrohydrodynamic applications. To edit educational textbooks and technical handbooks and organize international workshops and symposia related to electrohydrodynamics.

Past Achievements:

The committee has regularly organized a technical session at the CEIDP meeting since 1996 and several workshops since 1997. The committee also organized a short course in July 1996 at Udine, Italy and the course notes were published by Springer, Berlin in 1998 as a recommended textbook on the subject. The committee edited and wrote the "Electrohydrodynamic" section of the Electrostatic Handbook published in 1999 by Ohm Press, Tokyo under the Institute of Electrostatic Japan. The committee also established international standard terminologies and dimensional parameters for use in the study of electrohydrodynamics and a summary of the recommendation was published in IEEE Trans. DEI January 2003 along with a special issue of Electrohydrodynamics and Flow Electrification edited by the committee.

Current and Future Activities:

The 5th International Electrohydrodynamics Workshop, Aug.30-31, 2004, Poitiers, France and 4th International Symposium on the Non-Thermal Plasma Pollution Control and Sustainable Energy Development Technology, May 10-14, 2004, Panama Beach, USA will be co-sponsored and the special session will be organized by the committee. The committee also plans to propose a Digest issue for the IEEE DEI in the near future and the establishment of a subcommittee for editing a Handbook for Electrohydrodynamics.

Current New Field of Interests:

Past few years several new research areas in high electric field in micro or nano scales were identified and investigated, but not limited, by the committee members as follows; 1. Aerospace engineering for active aircraft EHD motion controls; 2. Nano-Technology for EHD atomization generated advanced material nano-particles; 3. Thermal and fluid management of electronics by EHD under reduced gravities; 4. Pollution control by electrohydraulic discharge techniques; and 5. Bio-medical engineering for EHD cell motion control and fusion etc.
