DIELECTRICS AND ELECTRICAL INSULATION SOCIETY

Education Committee

Chaired by
Dr. Vishnu K. Lakdawala

The Education Committee of DEIS is responsible for all issues involving the training of engineers and scientists in the dielectrics arena. It is particularly interested in mounting programs, which serve the needs of the student community. In this connection, the committee administers an annual program for the award of student Fellowship stipends for individuals motivated to study in the technical area of interest to the Society. An Annual Call for Proposals is issued (through the columns of the EI Magazine and recommendations are made to the DEIS Awards Committee for the award of Fellowships based on the perceived quality, relevance and probability of success of the proposals received. Successful applicants are expected to produce a report of their work or publish the work in a Society Journal. The current value of the total award money is $ 15,000. Typically this money is distributed between 3 to 5 students. It is usually considered as a matching fund for existing student support. The committee is hoping that these funds will be increased and more students can be supported. Also, the committee is looking into possibility of establishing some type of "post-doctoral" fellowship in the dielectrics and insulation research arena.

Students are also much encouraged to attend DEIS conferences. The Society (through the auspices of its conference organizing committees) provides a limited number of grants (currently about $300) to help defray the expenses of bone fide students attending Society meetings. Instructions for applying for these awards, which are granted on a competitive basis, are usually provided for each participating conference in the call for papers of the meeting..

A video-tape library is maintained by the Education Committee. Topics related to Dielectrics and their applications are highlighted in a series of VHS videotapes {international readers should note that these tapes are only in NTSC format. PAL and other formats are not supported}. These tapes may be borrowed. The conditions of loan and a complete listing of topics may be obtained from the Education Committee Chairman (Listed above).
