AdCom meeting

A meeting of DEIS AdCom was held on Tuesday afternoon, October 17, 2006 at the Chouteau room of the Hyatt Regency Crown Center, Kansas City, MO. As the President, R. Hebner, was unable to attend, VP Administration , W. McDermid, chaired the meeting.

Appointments of DEIS officers for 2007 and AdCom members for 2007 – 2009

W. McDermid - President

H. Kirkici – Vice President Administration

R. Gerhard-Multhaupt - Vice President Technical.

H. Hiziroglu, G.C. Montanari and T. Okamoto – AdCom members, second term

R. Fleming, H. Okubo and S. Rowland – AdCom members, first term

DEIS Fellowships

Only three applications for student fellowships were received. It was decided to advertise the fellowships in the literature of DEIS sponsored conferences, for example, in the programs of the CEIDP, ICSD, and the ISEI. It was suggested that a requirement of the fellowship should be that every recipient presents a summary of their work at a conference and that recipients be recognized at the conference banquet.

Chapters

Although AdCom had approved financial aid so that DEIS Chapters could cover the expenses of invited speakers, so far no chapters had applied for this aid. Eight distinguished lecturers are willing to participate in the program.

Meetings

DEIS will withdraw its technical co-sponsorship for the International Conference on Electric Charges in Non-conducting Materials (CSC) because of problems related to the organization of the last two conferences. There is a need to offer professional development hours (PDHs) at conferences held in North America .

Publications

The impact factor of both the Transactions and the Magazine improved in 2005. The impact factor is important to obtain funding for European universities. The definition of the impact factor strongly favors review-type papers and not necessarily original work.

Starting in 2008 there will be no more special issues of the Transactions associated with conferences but only for specific topics.

In 2007 the Magazine will have two co-editors rather than one editor in Chief so that there will be continuity in the preparation and publication in the event of an emergency. Each co-editor would be responsible for alternate issues. The position of co-editor was advertised in the Nov/Dec 2006 issue (page XX). A backup editor in chief for the Transactions will be named.

In an executive session, AdCom decided on new honoraria for the editor in chief of the Transactions and the two co-editors of the Magazine.

DEIS web-site

There was general agreement that the DEIS web-site was in need of updating as it does not compare well with the web-sites of other IEEE Societies or organizations. The update could be carried out by John Berberian or by a company that specializes in preparing web-sites. Peter Morshuis, who recommended that the new web-site should be attractive to young people, will chair a committee to look into what improvements should be made to the web-site. Please contact Peter at peter.morshuis@ieee.org if you have any ideas or comments.

Items raised by VP Technical

There will be a workshop on aging at the 2007 ICSD.

The chair of the Electronics & Radiation Committee is vacant.

Although the Biodielectrics Committee has been inactive the subject is of great importance and DEIS should be involved.

The Outdoor Insulation Committee is involved in a joint DEIS/PES task force with 21 members to establish guidelines for the selection of insulators for use under conditions of icing. For more information please contact Massoud Farzaneh at farzaneh@uqac.ca.

The next AdCom meeting will be on Thursday 12 July 2007 during the ICSD in Winchester , U.K.
